Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 7, 2026

Been (“we”, “us”) is a travel life-log app and related website. This policy explains what information we handle when you use the Been mobile app or visit beentogether.app.

Information we collect

  • Account information. If you create an account, we store your email address and a hashed password so you can sign in and sync across devices.
  • Travel content you create. Places you pin, visit dates, journal notes, optional photos, and community travel tips you post. Tips may show the local part of your email (the portion before @) as an author name.
  • Location. With your permission, the app may use your device location to center the map and help place pins. Location is processed on your device and may be sent to geocoding services to resolve place names. We do not continuously track your movements.
  • On-device data. Without an account, pins and journals stay on your device. With an account, that content can sync to our servers.
  • Website. This marketing and API site does not require an account. Standard server and hosting logs may record technical data such as IP address, browser type, and request paths.
  • Product analytics. We collect limited, anonymous usage signals to understand whether Been is working: website page views and performance (via our host), clicks on “get the app” store links, and a one-time app-install / open signal from the mobile app. These events use an opaque on-device install id and app version/platform — not your name, email, or travel content.

How we use information

  • Provide the app, sync, and travel-guide features you request
  • Authenticate you and keep your session secure
  • Show community tips and cached guide content
  • Respond to support requests
  • Measure installs and site traffic so we can maintain and improve Been

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for advertising.

Third parties

We rely on service providers to operate Been, including:

  • Cloud database and API hosting (Supabase)
  • Object storage and CDN for public travel-guide caches
  • Map tiles and geocoding (OpenStreetMap / Nominatim and platform geocoding)
  • Wikivoyage for publicly licensed travel-guide excerpts
  • Website hosting and privacy-friendly web analytics / performance insights (e.g. Vercel)

These providers process data only as needed to provide their services to us. We do not include advertising or third-party marketing-attribution SDKs in the app.

Retention

Account and synced content remain until you delete them via the Delete account page, the app, or by emailing us. Soft-deleted items may remain in backups for a limited period. Sessions expire after a set period of inactivity or when you sign out. On-device data remains until you remove it or uninstall the app.

Your choices

  • Use Been without an account (data stays on your device)
  • Deny or revoke location permission in system settings
  • Edit or delete pins, visits, photos, and tips you created
  • Sign out to end the current cloud session
  • Delete your account and synced cloud data at any time on our Delete account page, or by emailing hello@beentogether.app

Children

Been is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We use industry-standard measures such as hashed passwords and encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
